7.1.8   Checking the Outlook Setup

These instructions apply to Microsoft Office 365 (also known as Outlook 2016 and Outlook 2019, versions 15.x and 16.x). For other versions of Outlook, please see the Checking the Outlook 2011 Setup section.

  1. Temporarily quit the Outlook - Filter Mailboxes app. When Outlook - Filter Mailboxes is not running, new messages should collect in the InboxSpamSieve folder. If this is not happening, check that you have created rules for all your accounts, as described in Step 4 of the Setting Up Outlook section. As an alternative to creating the rule in Outlook in Steps 5–9 of the Outlook IMAP/Exchange Account Rules section, if your mail server lets you create rules you could create one that moves all new messages to the InboxSpamSieve folder. This can sometimes work around problems where Outlook rules don’t work reliably.

  2. Make sure that the Outlook - Filter Mailboxes app is running in your Dock, as described in Step 5 of the Setting Up Outlook section.

  3. If you are using macOS 10.14 or later, make sure that Outlook Filter Mailboxes has Automation access to control Outlook and SpamSieve. Script Menu or FastScripts (depending on which you are using) also needs Automation access to control Outlook and SpamSieve.

  4. Choose Install Outlook Scripts from the SpamSieve menu.

  5. Select a spam message in Outlook.

  6. Choose SpamSieve - Train as Spam from the Scripts menu to tell SpamSieve that it is spam.

  7. Remove the categories of the message (using Message ‣ Categorize ‣ Clear All).

  8. Drag the message back to your inbox and select it there.

  9. Choose SpamSieve - Move If Spam from the Scripts menu.

If the message moved to the Junk E-mail folder and its category was changed to Junk after Step 7, the script worked. SpamSieve will be able to catch other messages like this if it’s properly configured and trained.

If the message’s category did not change to Junk, there is some other problem with Outlook or SpamSieve. Please contact technical support and explain what happened when you followed these instructions. Please include your Console log. There are also links on the script page to enable debug logging so that additional information is logged.
