Identifies Spam Correctly, Won't Move to Target Spam Folder/Mark as Read

Using Apple Mail 10.3 with SpamSieve 2.9.98

My primary/personal E-mail address has been deluged with a high volume (30+ per day) of spam. I’ve been training SpamSieve to recognise them correctly, which it now does, but it won’t:

  • Move the message to the target “Spam” folder (“On My Mac/All Accounts” section, per the instruction manual); and
  • Mark the message as Unread.

It does move it to the Spam folder of my primary E-mail address, but doesn’t mark them as unread.

I’ve confirmed that the SpamSieve rule is configured correctly, and is at the top of the Rules list, and the target Spam folder is spelled correctly etc.

However, when I manually “Apply Rules” to the spam messages from the contextual menu, it does identify them, move them to the correct folder, and mark them as read.

Why won’t it do so automatically any more?

SpamSieve always moves the messages to the mailbox that you selected (e.g. the one under On My Mac) and does not change the read/unread status (so unread messages will stay unread).

In this case, it sounds like you have a server spam filter that is moving the messages to the server Spam mailbox and marking them as read before they get to your Mac. So they are not processed by Mail rules or SpamSieve. Please see this page for more information.
