Some outgoing emails vanishing

Hello Michael,
I am having an issue when using Postbox (Ver 4.0.8) with Spamsieve (Ver 2.9.22)
I’m using an iMac with OSX 10.11.1
Also in current email contact with tech support at Postbox regarding this problem.
Some outgoing emails are intermittently going unsent (vanishing).
I am advised to disable Spamsieve.
The issue stops occurring.
Spamsieve is disabled until further notice.
However, I need to have Spamsieve working.
I’d be grateful for your input on what can be done.
I can email you a copy of all the emails exchanged with Postbox - if this can help - please let me know
There was also a related Postbox crash report- which went off to Apple.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Henryk

That sounds like a very serious issue. However, it seems unlikely to be caused by SpamSieve. With Postbox, SpamSieve simply operates as a plug-in that says “yes” or ”no” when Postbox asks it if an incoming message is spam. It doesn’t access the mail server or outgoing messages. However, please send me the messages that you exchanged with Postbox and I’ll follow up with them to try to figure this out. They have the code to the SpamSieve plug-in, so it should be easy for them to see exactly what it does.

Copy of emails exchanged with Postbox …
Hi Michael,
Thanks for your message.
Here is the exchange of emails with Postbox.
Let me know if you need anything else.
Kind regards
Henryk

OK. Will stay with your recommendation.
By the way, are you are in touch with Spamsieve (c-command.com - Michael
Tsai) ?
Or, should I contact him about this?

Henryk,

OK. Our recommendation is to run without Spamsieve for a while. We do not know what it could be doing to Postbox to cause problems, but for now, let’s try turning it off.

My sincere apologies for causing confusion.
I should have checked what I’d written before sending my previous response.
Tiredness takes it toll on me …
Spamsieve is now disabled.
The problem only happened when Spamsieve was running normally.

Henryk,

We’re confused a bit by this response. You said that you enabled Spamsieve, then enabled it again? Are all of the problems happening when Spamsieve enabled?

Good evening Postbox support -
Very sorry, but as I was waiting for a reply, my curiosity just got the
better of me.
I always get lots of Spam around the weekend - so I enabled Spamsieve to
see what happens.
But, you were quite correct with your advice.
Within a while, one of my outgoing emails - vanished as previously
reported.
The issue is still present.
So I re-enabled Spamsieve, and restarted Postbox.
The outgoing email caused Postbox to crash.
A report went off to Apple.
I will leave Spamsieve enabled until further notice.
Await your comments.
Kind regards
Henryk

Henryk,

We recommend turning SpamSieve off for some time. Add-ons can change the DNA of Postbox in unexpected ways. But for now, let’s try it with it off.

Good morning,
Thanks for the email.
Disabled Spamsieve.
The previous problem with unsent outgoing emails seems to have stopped.
I do not understand why stopping Spamsieve should make any difference
(to Postbox) as it works with incoming emails.
I’ve left Spamsieve enabled at present, but would obviously prefer to
start using it again ASAP.
Please advise next step I should take.
Kind regards
Henryk

Looks like you’re using Spam Sieve. Let’s try turning that off to see if this helps clear up the problem.

Postbox contains a Trouble-Shooting panel to help address issues you may be experiencing. Please go to the “Help” menu and select “Trouble Shooting…” and then review these options:

  1. Safe Mode - This temporarily disables all add-ons and custom settings.
  2. Permanently Disable all Add-ons - this eliminates the possibility that a 3rd party add-on is causing issues with Postbox.
  3. Reset User Interface - If Postbox windows are not displaying properly, selecting this option will reset the interface.
  4. Reset Search Index - This removes the search index, so you will want to select Tools menu -> Indexing -> Index All Folders after restart.
  5. Open Profile Manager on Restart

Can you please check 1 and 2, and then Restart Postbox? Does the issue persist?

Hello again,
I have noticed that sometime I get an error message after sending an
email “There was a problem copying to the sent folder” after I press
“try again” it then sends the email.

Hello, and thanks for your email.

  1. It is totally unpredictable. As previously mentioned it tends to
happen with “original” emails, as opposed to forwarded emails, or with
    "quick replies.
  2. It definitely happens on my principle account - which is :-
hsmatysiak@barnhouse.co.uk. However, I only use the other accounts
occasionally - and only seldom use them for sending emails - so the
answer to your second question is “I really don’t know” as I’m not aware
    of any issues.
    I hope that helps.
    Kind regards
    Henryk

Henryk,

Does this happen every time? Or is this unpredictable?

Also, and your answer to this is very important, is this with just one account? Or many accounts? Or all accounts? Please answer this question very carefully, as it makes a big difference.

Hi Henryk,

Thanks for using Postbox, and we’re sorry for any trouble you’re having.

Let’s first inspect your Unsent folder.

Go to your On My Mac account, and look for the Unsent folder. Do you see any messages in there?

Email (preferably the address used to purchase Postbox): hsmatysiak@barnhouse.co.uk
Operating System: Mac OS X
Summary: Outgoing emails unsent …
Problem Details: Some outgoing emails seem to go “unsent” for an unknown reason. I am using IMAP, and the other features seem to work just fine. However, I discovered that I had this “unsent” problem because someone complained that I hadn’t emailed them. I couldn’t find the original email on my machine, and it wasn’t in the sent folder. It had simply vanished. Most annoying predicament! I have restarted Postbox, restarted my iMac and run the trouble shooting suggestions, but the problem will keep on occurring. By the way, it doesn’t seem to happen when I use the “quick reply” function. But it happens when I compose a new email and then try to send it.

If you require any further details please let me know asap.
Kind regards
Henryk

Postbox told me that they don’t believe the problem is caused by SpamSieve but recommend running without any add-ons for a while so that they can provide support in the event that it occurs again.

Some emails vanishing while using Postbox with Spamsieve.

I can’t be certain that Postbox are right. But will go along with their recommendation, and am not using Spamsieve with Postbox for the time being. Let’s see if anything else transpires. It’s always difficult to track down the real cause of intermittent problems like this.
