They are Apple\u2019s preferred format for distributing Mac software and the only archive format whose contents you can directly access in the Mac Finder\u2014no extraction or third-party software required.<\/p>\n\n<p>Deliver your Mac app on a <tt>.dmg<\/tt> file with a <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/licenses\">software license agreement<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/custom-volume-icon\">custom volume icon<\/a>, and a precise <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/layouts\">icon layout<\/a> atop a Retina-optimized background picture. Customers can install simply by dragging and dropping the app onto the convenient <tt>Applications<\/tt> folder link. <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/signing\">Code-sign<\/a> your <tt>.dmg<\/tt> so that macOS knows it can be trusted after download.<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/dropdmg-window-detail-drawer@2x.png\" title=\"DropDMG Window: Log Detail Drawer\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"161\" alt=\"DropDMG Window: Log Detail Drawer\" src=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/dropdmg-window-detail-drawer-thumb%402x.png\" height=\"129\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>This is a free update for owners of <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/29\/dropdmg-3-0\/\">DropDMG 3.0<\/a> that includes the following enhancements:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>Updated the user interface for macOS 11 Big Sur:\n\t<ul>\n\t\t<li>Redesigned the application icon.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>The main window uses the new inline title bar style, the toolbar defaults to icon-only mode and supports the new large icon style, and the toolbar icons have been updated.<\/li>\n\t\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/preferences-configurations@2x.png\" title=\"Preferences: Configurations\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"161\" alt=\"Preferences: Configurations\" src=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/preferences-configurations-thumb%402x.png\" height=\"127\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>The <strong>Preferences<\/strong> window uses the new, centered toolbar style and has updated icons.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Table views in the <strong>Preferences<\/strong> window have been updated.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>The user interface now reflects the fact that macOS 11 removes support for creating NDIF disk images.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/layouts\">Layouts<\/a> section of the manual has updated guidance on background picture dimensions that takes into account the window layout changes in macOS 11.<\/li>\n\t\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/preferences-licenses@2x.png\" title=\"Preferences: Licenses\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"161\" alt=\"Preferences: Licenses\" src=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/preferences-licenses-thumb%402x.png\" height=\"122\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Updated the <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/custom-volume-icon\">Custom volume icon<\/a> feature for Big Sur.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Worked around a macOS bug that prevented progress bars from being drawn.<\/li>\n\t\t<li>Worked around an animation glitch.<\/li>\n\t<\/ul>\n\t<\/li>\n\t<li>Added support for LZMA-compressed disk images on macOS 10.15 and later. This <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/format\">format<\/a> is even more tightly compressed than bzip2, with slightly slower compression speed and much faster decompression.<\/li>\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/man-page@2x.png\" title=\"dropdmg Tool Man Page\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"161\" alt=\"dropdmg Tool Man Page\" src=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/man-page-thumb%402x.png\" height=\"170\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>When using the <tt>dropdmg<\/tt> command-line tool, you can now specify additional parameters in combination with <tt>--config-name<\/tt> to override the values in the configuration. (This also works with the corresponding AppleScript command and parameters.)<\/li>\n\t<li>Configurations now show a Gatekeeper badge on the icon when the disk image is code-signed.<\/li>\n\t<li>Various operations that used to require multiple passphrase prompts when dealing with an encrypted disk image now require only one.<\/li>\n\t<li>DropDMG no longer lets you try to codesign encrypted disk images, as macOS does not support that.<\/li>\n\t<li>DropDMG now requires macOS 10.9 or later.<\/li>\n\t<li>When encountering various kinds of file permissions errors, DropDMG will now recommend that you grant it <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/security-privacy-acce\">Full Disk Access<\/a>.<\/li>\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/preferences-layouts@2x.png\" title=\"Preferences: Layouts\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"161\" alt=\"Preferences: Layouts\" src=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/preferences-layouts-thumb%402x.png\" height=\"119\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Added more fine-grained control over DropDMG\u2019s layout checks, so that it can still ensure that icon sizes and positions are correct even if you\u2019ve told it to ignore a Finder error that causes the window size to be slightly off.<\/li>\n\t<li>DropDMG no longer considers it to be an error if an icon position is off by only a fraction of a point, which can happen with certain combinations of file types and Finder view settings.<\/li>\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/verify-image@2x.png\" title=\"Verify Image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"161\" alt=\"Verify Image\" src=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/images\/3.6\/verify-image-thumb%402x.png\" height=\"96\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Worked around a bug in macOS 10.15 that could cause a spurious \u201cPermission denied\u201d error when using the <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/change-image-passphrase\">Change Image Passphrase\u2026<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/convert-image-archive\">Convert Image\/Archive\u2026<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/verify-image\">Verify Image\u2026<\/a> command.<\/li>\n\t<li>Removed support for Growl, as all supported macOS versions now have Notification Center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>DropDMG 3.6 works with macOS 10.9 through 11.0. Older <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/help\/version-history\">DropDMG versions<\/a> are <a href=\"https:\/\/c-command.com\/dropdmg\/support#older-versions\">available<\/a> for older versions of macOS.
