I'm wondering if it's to do with where these particular emails come from... they are redirected from virgin.net to mobileme (IMAP), and perhaps the Train As Good doesn't know where to put them back??

It’s possible that “Train as Good” might not be able to figure out which account the messages are from. However, that wouldn’t cause the messages to totally disappear. It simply picks the most likely inbox that you have and asks Mail to move the messages there. Worst case scenario—unless Mail malfunctions—the messages go to the wrong inbox.

If you go to Mail’s Preferences window and look under Accounts, are there any accounts that are disabled? Sometimes Mail gets confused and the messages end up in the inbox of an account that’s disabled (and, thus, hidden). In that case, you could enable the account and look in its inbox.

This is basically a dialogue with myself, I realize, but here's my latest thinking: Use Evernote only on the PC, then export notes as html into the appropriate Eaglefiler-managed folder.

I haven't thought through all the pros and cons, but this might avoid the annoyance of having separate applications for documents and pdfs (Eaglefiler) and clippings (Evernote), especially since Eaglefiler is an ideal clipper on the Mac.

Hello Michael,
I did that last Friday and nothing happened :-(. However, I needed to leave so actually hard switched the Mac off for the weekend, something that does not happen that often.

On turning on today, it searched for up-dates as usual and another patch from Microsoft was ready to install for outlook (saying Critical). I ran this, I also checked that Install Outlook scripts was done again in Spamsieve, and - everything seems to be working again :-)

Thanks for your efforts here.

Just deleted some 75 spams that had gotten through since last week. Doubt there will be many more until Microsoft screw everything up again..

The following was posted (http://c-command.com/blog/2012/04/26/spamsieve-2-9-1/) on the SpamSieve blog:

Version 2.9.1 of SpamSieve...

The following was posted on the SpamSieve blog:

Version 2.9.1 of SpamSieve is now available. This is a free update that includes the following changes:

Added support for Microsoft Outlook 2011 SP2 (a.k.a. 14.2.x). If SpamSieve can detect that you were using Outlook 2011 before, and that SP2 has been installed, SpamSieve will auto-update its scripts automatically. Otherwise, you can choose Install Outlook Scripts from the SpamSieve menu. Either way, the SpamSieve rules in Outlook will continue to work without modification.

SpamSieve now tries to detect whether its Apple Mail plug-in is damaged and auto-heal the installed copy if necessary.

If there’s an error updating SpamSieve’s Apple Mail plug-in, it now reports more information to try to diagnose the problem.

If the Apple Mail plug-in detects that it’s damaged, it will alert the user to download and install a fresh copy.

SpamSieve now checksums the Outlook script files (both the installed and built-in copies) to detect whether they are damaged.

Made a change to eliminate a particular cause of false positives for some users.

SpamSieve no longer triggers Mac OS X’s “accept incoming network connections” firewall dialog.

Added some exception guards to work around bugs in the Growl SDK.

When an unexpected error occurs and no stack trace is available, SpamSieve will now try to report the approximate location.

Improved the What information should I include when I report a problem? section of the manual.

For information about previous releases of SpamSieve, please see the version history.

Due to some duplicate downloading, and possibly some accidentally repeated archiving, I have duplicates of hundreds, if not thousands, of messages in EagleFiler. I thought I could use the script to Remove Duplicates, but it does nothing. On checking, I see in the AppleScript dictionary that "selected records" excludes email messages for some reason.

EagleFiler checks for duplicates at the file level. For e-mail, this normally means the mailbox level, since multiple e-mail messages are stored in a single mailbox file. EagleFiler currently does not support surgery within a mailbox file. The plan is to eventually add a built-in command for removing duplicate messages. But, for now, there are basically two approaches that you could take:

Make a copy of the mailbox file and use a utility such as formail to remove the duplicates. Then import the (slimmed) mailbox back into EagleFiler. This will not preserve the tags or notes on the messages, but it should be relatively fast.

Create a folder in EagleFiler next to your mailbox. Drag the messages from the mailbox to the folder. EagleFiler will create a separate .eml file for each message. Import the folder into a separate EagleFiler library. Since each message is a file, the normal EagleFiler duplicate checking will kick in. Then you can select the non-duplicate messages and tell EagleFiler to merge them back into a mailbox. This method will preserve any message metadata.

It’s safe, but there is a small window of time in which the file will be there but it won’t yet be recorded in EagleFiler’s database. I think you could just write your script so that if the record with the expected name isn’t found, wait a few seconds and try again.

...

This is more of an Outlook issue than SpamSieve, but it is related, so I thought I'd post it here so see if anyone has any thoughts. Here goes...

In the Outlook 2011 Navigation Pane, there is a numerical indicator showing you how many unread messages are in each folder. For some crazy reason, Microsoft decided to make this indicate all messages, rather than unread messages in the Junk E-Mail folder (only). I find this really annoying. Has anyone figured out a way to change this behavior?

Here's why it's related to SpamSieve... I use both server side spam filtering and SpamSieve. The server catches a good portion of the spam and routes it to the Junk folder. SpamSieve catches the rest and moves it to the junk folder. But SpamSieve also marks mail in the Junk folder as read if it thinks it's spam. SpamSieve is so darn accurate that I don't have to bother looking at the Junk folder unless there is an unread message in there, meaning that the server side filter flagged it, but SpamSieve doesn't think it's spam.

As an aside, the reason I have it set up this way is because I need some basic spam filtering to still be going on when my Outlook client can't be running. For example, when I'm traveling and my laptop (only computer) is packed in the car and I'm checking email on my phone (no, not while I'm driving!).

Anyway, with things set up this way, I don't ever need to look at the Junk folder unless a message shows up in there that is marked as unread. But with Outlook indicating all messages instead of only unread ones, I'm forced to go into the Junk folder and check it (if I remember).

To avoid forgetting to check the Junk folder, I've written a small Applescript applet that periodically checks the Junk folder and notifies me if it finds any unread messages. The applet is attached in case anyone wants to use it. (Note that it requires Growl and Satimage.osax to be installed.) If you'd rather not have Growl notifications, you could delete those from the script and instead use the commented out section that displays an Applescript notification instead.

But... If anyone knows a way to get Outlook to display only the count of unread messages in the Junk folder, please let me know!

The following was posted on the SpamSieve blog:

SpamSieve has been updated to version 2.9. This is a free update that includes the following changes:

Added support for upcoming versions of Mac OS X.

Made various changes to improve SpamSieve’s filtering accuracy.

SpamSieve is now code-signed using a Developer ID certificate for Gatekeeper.

When training an Exchange message as good in Apple Mail, SpamSieve is better at moving it to the proper inbox.

Processing incoming messages with Outlook is more efficient. To take advantage of this change, choose Install Outlook Scripts from the SpamSieve menu.

If you’ve used the SpamSieve - Change Settings command in Apple Mail to tell SpamSieve not to use a local spam mailbox, training a message as spam will now try to move the message to a spam mailbox on the same server account, rather than always using the first account.

Added support for training messages as spam via Herald (version 2.1.2 and later), a notification plug-in for Apple Mail.

When sorting spam messages by color in Apple Mail, you can now use Grey as a synonym for Gray.

The score script command has a new auto training parameter that can be used to override the setting in the preferences on a case-by-case basis. This might be useful, for example, if you’re writing an AppleScript to triage messages that have already been classified, and you just want to get SpamSieve’s opinion without having to make any corrections.

Adjusted the drone AppleScripts so that they’re easier to troubleshoot.

If Apple Mail gives SpamSieve empty data for a message, the plug-in now assumes the message is good and does not pass it on to SpamSieve for analysis.

Added support for Growl notifications via GNTP (requires Mac OS X 10.7 or later).

SpamSieve is better at handling file permission errors.

SpamSieve is better at handling errors when running helper tools.

Improved SpamSieve’s ability to still function when the application package is damaged.

Added the AddStandardRules esoteric preference, which lets you prevent SpamSieve from creating its built-in blocklist and whitelist rules if you prefer to manage the rules yourself.

Fixed a bug that could reduce SpamSieve’s filtering accuracy for some messages with attached files.

Made various improvements to the documentation.

Updated the German localization.
