Over the last few weeks or months (I've lost track), I've been getting loads of spam about stocks and movie production. I train each one as spam, and SS corrects itself. But they keep getting through. They use many of the same words, so I'd think that SS would have caught on by now. One explanation is that whoever's behind these is just busier than ever. But my total spam count is about the same or just a little bit more.

I've checked the settings, and it's all normal. SS does filter out most other spam (except now and then when it seems to fail completely and let through a bunch of even the most obvious ones).

I have been ignoring the False Negatives but have noticed something that indicates I need to pay more attention. The question is how to do it. I have started running Bitdefender on a regular basis. Often it detects and reports a trojan file in the SpamSieve False Negative folder. Under my current Bitdefender settings, it is deleted and there is nothing to send you because I delete trash and Spam on a daily basis.

The Bitdefender options for infected items are "Try to disinfect or move to quarantine" or "Take No Action"

I could change to "Take no action" and them afterwards, send to the False Negatives file, etc. to Spam Sieve with a message identifying the one flagged as a trojan.

Would that work? Anything else I need to do?

I am seeking to understand the role of the MessageLog in SpamSieve's ~/Library/Application Support folder in SS's operation. My MessageLog folder contains over 14,000 items consuming 1.5 GB of solid state drive space on my MacBook Pro Retina laptop (SS 2.97, OS 10.8.3, Apple Mail) and grows daily. It appears to have virtually every good message going back to Dec 2011. Is the file automatically trimmed or size limited in some fashion or will it just continue to grow & consume disk space as long as I use SpamSieve?
Regards,
This has happened on rare occasions before but has been quite frequent (had to restart Outlook 4 times today) since updating.

The following was posted (http://c-command.com/blog/2013/05/01/spamsieve-2-9-7/) on the SpamSieve blog:

Version 2.9.7 of SpamSieve...

The following was posted on the SpamSieve blog:

Version 2.9.7 of SpamSieve is now available. This is a free update that includes the following changes:

Improved compatibility with pre-release versions of Mac OS X.

Made various changes to improve SpamSieve’s filtering accuracy.

SpamSieve no longer links against AppleScriptKit. This removes some GUI scripting functionality (which is now largely available by other means) but works around an OS bug that could prevent SpamSieve from launching.

Worked around a bug in Apple Mail’s iCloud rule syncing.

SpamSieve is better at moving trained messages when Outlook has lost track of the special Junk E-mail folder.

Fixed a problem where Apple Mail couldn’t communicate with SpamSieve when the file permissions were incorrect.

Fixed a bug where SpamSieve couldn’t load any addresses from Outlook if it reported an error while getting the e-mail address of a contact.

Fixed a bug editing counts in the Corpus window (due to suspected 64-bit OS bug).

Added more checks that the folders SpamSieve relies upon have the proper permissions.

Improved error reporting for Apple Mail, Growl, and more.

Improved handling of file permissions errors.

The Apple Mail drone script now sets the junk status.

Wrote a script that allows SpamSieve to filter messages (in Apple Mail) that have been organized by SaneBox.

Improved the Japanese localization.

SpamSieve now requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

SpamSieve 2.9.7 works with Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.8 and requires an e-mail client. Older versions are available for older operating systems. For information about previous releases of SpamSieve, please see the version history.

SpamSieve is doing beautifully for me. But Growl is a little peculiar. It does pick up an accurate count on incoming mail, but it also issues other bulletins that make no sense. "23 good messages", for instance. I see this, check my Mail program, and there may be, say 21 messages in the Inbox that have already been vetted when they came in. I've noticed that if I check a mailbox On My Mac to read something I received a while ago, it sometimes sends me notice of the number of 'good messages' in that mailbox.
This is not a problem for me. It is nothing like getting the spam I was getting before I discovered SpamSieve. But it would be nice to get it to not do this.
I repeat -- the accurate information is getting to me through Growl; there is also extra information that has no meaning for me.

I have been using SpamSieve for several years, and it has been phenomenally accurate. Lately, however, more and more junk is getting through - about 20 offers a day from Dr Oz, coffee beans, and dozens of lottery prizes!

I have my own domain at HostGator and have access to the SpamAssasin config file. After reading through the FAQs, it seems like SpamAssassin can be configured to further improve SpamSieve's filtering capabilities:

Quote:

Many mail hosts offer SpamAssassin or a similar filter. Make sure the filter is set not to add **Junk** or another tag to the message’s subject. Also, try to configure the filter not to move the messages out of the inbox. It is actually good if you can leave the filter on, but set so that it only tags the message’s headers (e.g. by adding X-Spam-Status and X-Spam-Report headers). This will allow SpamSieve to incorporate the work that the server filter has done into its analysis.

Could someone please elaborate on how to achieve this? I read through the syntax at:
http://spamassassin.apache.org/full/...ssin_Conf.html, and got completely lost!

Any help will be appreciated.

I have 2 macs at home an iMac and a MBAir on both I am using SpamSieve <2.9.6> on Mac OS X <10.7.5> on Mail.app <5.3 (build 1283)>

For the first time today I noticed two never before seen issues after years of issue free use of SpamSieve. I observed this first on the iMac.

1) The Mail.app Junk mail filtering preference turned itself ON spontaneously. I noticed this when it flagged a message as possible Junk. I immediately turned this flag off in Mail.app preferences. Then I Quit Mail.app and restarted it to discover the Junk flag was back on. I repeated this with the same result. I then tried this on the MBAir and noticed the same problem. Junk mail flag was ON spontaneously. I turned it off. Quit Mail.app and launched it again to find the Junk flag back ON.

2) On the iMac when I quit Mail.app SpamSieve does not quit as expected. However SpamSieve does launch with Mail.app

3) On the MBAir when I quit Mail.app SpamSieve also quits as normal and launches with Mail.app

For this Junk mail filtering preference to suddenly start on both of my macs suggests it might be a bug rather than a corrupted preference file.

I have check Software Update and my Mac OS is up to date.

What do you suggest?

For now I will have to turn off Mail.app's Junk mail option each time I launch SpamSieve.

If necessary, I will delete Mail.app's preferences on one of my Macs to see if this resolves the issue.

I found no posts on this issue here and one post on Apple Support Communities on this topic without replies at: Junk Mail Filter Keeps Enabling Itself

Normal story I guess, was getting inundated with spam, mostly on just one of my accounts, but can't afford to get rid of that account. Mail host has spam filtering, but not really cutting it, maintaining the mail filters was taking more time than deleting the spam. Then I came across SpamSieve in an article from TidBITS - the rest is history - so is the spam. Thank you very much for giving me my mail life back.
