Training stopped working

Mac OS X: 10.7.2
SpamSieve Ver. 2.8.8
Apple Mail Version 5.1 (1251/1251.1)

My SpamSieve has been working fine for a couple of Months, but just yesterday, the Train as Spam and Train as Good command quit working either by menu selection or hot key. Neither method works.
If I press the hot key or select the command from the menu, it does nothing.
I have completed the steps in 8.1.1 “Checking the apple mail setup” from the manual.
That did not help.
Any ideas about what to do?

Do you see any errors from Mail or SpamSieve in the “All Messages” section of the Console application? Also, it might help to download and install a fresh copy of SpamSieve, and then choose “Install Apple Mail Plug-In” from the SpamSieve menu.
